Storia

Liu Bolin nasce nel 1973 nella provincia nord-orientale dello Shandong. Si forma all’ Accademia Centrale d’Arte Applicata e diviene allievo del celebre artista Sui Jianguo. Cresce e si forma nel fermento che coincide con l’inizio del rapido sviluppo economico, in un periodo di profondi cambiamenti testimoniati negli scatti della serie Hiding in the City che hanno dato inizio alla sua carriera. La ricerca è iniziata nel 2005 e arriva in Europa nel 2008 in tutte le grandi città dove lavora interessato al patrimonio storico artistico.

Artista della fotografia, la sua ricerca è influenzata dalla Scuola di Düsseldorf e dalle inquadrature di interni come quelle di Candida Höfer o Thomas Struth, città che tra il 1976 e il 1997 ha rappresentato un luogo di eccellenza della produzione fotografica e un centro di formazione professionale e artistica ad altissimo livello. Da qui si evolve la particolare cifra stilistica in cui Bolin si nasconde e cammuffa grazie alla pittura all’interno della scena scelta. A fianco a lui un team esperto che riesce a dipingerlo fino a farlo scomparire.

Una protesta silenziosa: Liu Bolin si rende invisibile per farsi notare. Da allora, ha creato opere che combinano fotografia, body art, arte ottica e scultura vivente. Questo uomo-camaleonte posa per ore davanti a un muro, un paesaggio o un monumento per mimetizzarsi con lo scenario – occhi chiusi, una sagoma appena visibile – con l’aiuto dei suoi pittori-assistenti, senza alcun effetto digitale. Al termine del processo di mimetizzazione, interrompe la performance attraverso la fotografia.

Temi

Interessato ai temi di attualità ha scelto come sfondi gli scaffali dei supermercati e dei giornalai nel momento che voleva mettere in risalto il consumismo occidentale. Negli ultimi anni si è concentrato su temi di forte impatto politico e sociale come sul problema dei migranti che sbarcano in europa, War e in occasione della Festa Mondiale della Donna, 8 marzo, ha realizzato Target un’opera insieme con Nasibe Shamsaei, attivista, e Melania della Costa attrice italiana, dedicata alla protesta delle donne iraniane. Nella serie Target sono le persone a divenire parte integrante del progetto e quindi dell’opera finale, in una compartecipazione attiva e coerente con la tematica su cui si vuole riflettere

Biografia

La sua prima mostra personale risale al 1998 a Pechino, seguita da altre due rassegne circa dieci anni dopo, sempre della capitale cinese: Sculpture, all’Hotsun Art Space nel distretto 798 Art Zone (2007); Distortion, Hotsun Art Space, Dashanzi Art District (2007). Da allora le sue foto e le sculture tipiche della sua produzione sono state esposte nel più importante festival di fotografia contemporanea Les Rencontres d’Arles e in prestigiosi musei internazionali. Tra i più recenti solo show vanno ricordati: La forma profonda del reale, Università Bocconi, Milano (2019); Liu Bolin.Visible/Invisible, Mudec – Museo delle Culture, Milano (2019); The Theatre of Appearances al Musée de l’Elysée, Losanna (2019); Liu Bolin. The Invisible Man, Palacio de Gaviria, Madrid (2019); Liu Bolin: The Invisible Man, Erarta Museum, San Pietroburgo (2018); Ghost Stories, Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Parigi (2017); Galerie Party, Centre Pompidou – Acte II with Liu Bolin, Centre Pompidou, Galerie des enfants, Parigi (2017).

Nel 2015 il Museo de Contemporáneo di Buenos Aires lo invita per la personale Desapareciendo; l’anno successivo gli viene commissionato per il palazzo di New York, sede delle Nazioni Unite, il progetto We Are What We Eat. In Europa il suo lavoro è stato divulgato attraverso le mostre A Secret Tour al Museo H.C. Andersen di Roma (2012) e Hiding in Italy alla Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia di Milano (2010), e con la personale in Svezia The Invisible Man al Fotografiska Museet di Stoccolma (2011).

Ha collaborato con artisti contemporanei internazionali quali Botero, JR, Carlos Cruz Diez, Kenny Scharf e Rero e con diversi brand come Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Tod’s e altri. È stato testimonial per il 2017/2018 del marchio Moncler, in una campagna firmata da Annie Leibovitz, e nel 2018 è stato artista dell’anno della casa produttrice di champagne Ruinart.

L’ultima produzione lo ha visto tra i luoghi più iconici di Firenze dando vita al progetto Hiding in Florence (2022), che verrà raccontato e approfondito tramite eventi e mostre agli Uffizi e Palazzo Vecchio. Oggi Liu Bolin vive e lavora tra Pechino e l’Europa.

History

Liu Bolin was born in 1973 in the northeastern province of Shandong. He trained at the Central Academy of Applied Arts and became a student of the famous artist Sui Jianguo. It grows and takes shape in the ferment that coincides with the beginning of rapid economic development, in a period of profound changes witnessed in the shots of the Hiding in the City series that started his career. The research began in 2005 and arrived in Europe in 2008 in all the big cities where he works interested in the historical and artistic heritage.

Artist of photography, his research is influenced by the Düsseldorf School and by interior shots such as those of Candida Höfer or Thomas Struth, a city that between 1976 and 1997 represented a place of excellence in photographic production and a center for professional training and artistic at the highest level. From here evolves the particular stylistic figure in which Bolin hides and disguises thanks to the painting within the chosen scene. Beside him an expert team that manages to paint him until he disappears.

A silent protest: Liu Bolin makes himself invisible to get noticed. Since then, he has created works combining photography, body art, optical art and living sculpture. This man-chameleon poses for hours in front of a wall, a landscape or a monument to blend in with the scenery – eyes closed, a silhouette barely visible – with the help of his painters-assistants, without any digital effects. At the end of the camouflage process, he stops the performance through photography.

Themes

Interested in current affairs, he chose the shelves of supermarkets and newsagents as backgrounds when he wanted to highlight Western consumerism. In recent years he has focused on issues of strong political and social impact such as the problem of migrants landing in Europe, War and on the occasion of World Women’s Day, March 8, he created Target a work together with Nasibe Shamsaei, activist, and Melania della Costa Italian actress, dedicated to the protest of Iranian women. In the Target series, people become an integral part of the project and therefore of the final work, in an active and coherent sharing with the theme on which you want to reflect.

Biography

His first personal exhibition dates back to 1998 in Beijing, followed by two other exhibitions about ten years later, also in the Chinese capital: Sculpture, at the Hotsun Art Space in the 798 Art Zone district (2007); Distortion, Hotsun Art Space, Dashanzi Art District (2007). Since then his photos and the typical sculptures of his production have been exhibited in the most important contemporary photography festival Les Rencontres d’Arles and in prestigious international museums. Among the most recent solo shows we should mention: The deep form of reality, Bocconi University, Milan (2019); Liu Bolin.Visible/Invisible, Mudec – Museo delle Culture, Milan (2019); The Theater of Appearances at the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne (2019); Liu Bolin. In 2015 the Museo de Contemporáneo of Buenos Aires invited him for the personal Desapareciendo; the following year he was commissioned for the We Are What We Eat project for the New York building, headquarters of the United Nations. In Europe, his work has been popularized through the A Secret Tour exhibitions at the H.C. Andersen in Rome (2012) and Hiding in Italy at the Forma Foundation for Photography in Milan (2010), and with the solo exhibition in Sweden The Invisible Man at the Fotografiska Museet in Stockholm (2011).

He has collaborated with international contemporary artists such as Botero, JR, Carlos Cruz Diez, Kenny Scharf and Rero and with various brands such as Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Tod’s and others. He was testimonial for the 2017/2018 Moncler brand, in a campaign signed by Annie Leibovitz, and in 2018 he was artist of the year for the Ruinart champagne house.

The latest production saw it among the most iconic places in Florence, giving life to the Hiding in Florence project (2022), which will be told and explored through events and exhibitions at the Uffizi and Palazzo Vecchio. Today Liu Bolin lives and works between Beijing and Europe.
