E finalmente ci siamo: ART BASEL 2022!!!

Avete pronte le valige per Basilea? Aereo, treno o auto? io di solito alterno tra treno e automobile.

Dopo due anni difficili a causa della pandemia si torna alla più bella ed importante fiera d’arte contemporanea del mondo. Con qualche accorgimento e qualche cambiamento, ma la voglia è tanta. I collezionisti Cinesi hanno qualche difficoltà dovuta da misure antiCovid-19 e i collezionisti russi si trovano in una situazione difficile a causa del conflitto Russia-Ucraina e conti bloccati. 

Secondo gli addetti del settore, questo ha portato ad una nuova frequentazione della fiera, un rinnovarsi della platea di collezionisti occidentali ed orientali. 

Una nuova generazione in arrivo!! Un nuovo giro di collezionisti come anche un nuovo giro di artisti portati dalle gallerie, grande interesse per quelli definiti blue-chip, ma anche emergenti! Che grande energia!

Messe

Che cosa possiamo trovare di stimolante all’interno della fiera vera e propria? Gagosian ha portato un interessante e scenografico allestimento di JIM SHAW “Not Since Superman Died” del 2014 con grandi pannelli appesi al soffitto rappresentanti Superman in momenti di difficoltà.

La galleria di Città del Mexico OMR – oltre a Atelier Lieshout, Josè Dàvila, Jorge Méndez Blake- porta ‘A Labyrinth of a Straight Line’ di TROYCA: dipinti di un algoritmo binario e gli immersivi, giganteschi, universi di GABRIEL RICO realizzati con le perline fuse insieme a digitalizzare un’immagine presa col telescopio Hubble nel 2004. To Compound the small differences I & II 2022

Da P420 di Bologna troviamo LAURA GRISI con Variable Painting, una rara serie dal 1966. Opere su pannelli di plexiglass con nuvole, gli stessi pannelli possono scorrere a discrezione del proprietario.

Massimo de Carlo con Mapping the now porta una serie di mappe icone della storia dell’arte e realizzate da più artisti. Una riflessione multigenerazionale su confini, conflitti, culture e tensioni del mondo attuale.

Victoria Miro, oltre a Paula Rego e Chris Ofili, porta DO HO SUH Sockets/Switches (Rectangular/Horizontal), devo dire opera interessante, colorata e accattivante. Sono la riproduzione esatta di numerose prese, interruttori, pulsanti, maniglie realizzati in poliestere colorato trasparente. Una rappresentazione dell’uomo e della sua presenza moderna, di come l’architettura può riportare all’abbigliamento e a cosa questo rappresenta per una persona: che identità rappresenta e come possa cambiare. Al contempo tutti questi oggetti comuni disegnano l’anatomia di uno spazio con cui abbiamo preso grande confidenza, specie in questo periodo pandemico.

La Galleria Minini porta una serie di lavori storici di Carla Accardi già presentati nell’ultima mostra in galleria da Francesca a Milano, coloratissimi Peter Halley, un meraviglioso Kapoor e un’opera veramente scenografica in foglia d’oro di HARIS EPAMINONDA!

Presso Sies + Hoeke porta fotografia scultura e pittura con belle opere di MARCEL DZAMA sottomarine.

Portata da Gagosian e sempre impressionante il gigante edificio di RACHEL WITHEREAD realizzata per un progetto per il Guggenheim Museum e rappresentante la casa dell’artista in Londra che ci fa meditare sulle presenze ed assenze di spazi e del corpo umano tipiche di Witheread.

Numerose le videoinstallazioni. Soffrono un po’, invece, le opere a parete e le pitture. Certo non quelle, stupende, di Francis Alys coi suoi soliti dipinti di piccole dimensioni, questa volta dedicati a confini, fili spinati e recinzioni tra stati. Di impatto le opere di Andrea Zittel con i suoi vestiti 2003-2013, Leonardo Drew Number 341 (2022), un’installazione costruita su un’esplosione di frammenti di legno dipinto, in un ambientazione 3D molto particolare, Folkert de Jong, Michelangelo Pistoletto o Isa Genzken.

Fuori dalla fiera

La sezione Parcours di Art Basel dispone diverse installazioni in giro per la città vecchia. Ci sono ventun opere dislocate tra musei, giardini, quartieri generali, parcheggi e vecchi argentieri. Alcune per esempio:

Oscar Murillo collocato alla UBS Geschäftsstelle Basel in cui viene trattata le presenza umana, nella sua assenza, collocando delle semplici sedie da giardino in plastica con sopra dei piccoli dipinti e disegni.

Simon Starling, al Parking del Kunstmuseum, sottoterra in un parcheggio avveniristico, l’artista colloca un auto Fiat del 1968 ed un dipinti di Tiepolo tagliati in due. Curiosamente l’altra parte del Tiepolo è alla Fiat di Torino.

Bojan Šarčević all’ Antikenmuseum Basel e alla collezione Ludwig. Mostra un adattamento di un suo lavoro precedente con tre freezer lasciati all’aperto.

Fondazione Beyeler

Museo che ospita da 25 anni la collezione di Ernst e Hildy Beyeler, una delle più vaste di Alberto Giacometti, e punto di riferimento appena fuori Basilea e raggiungibile comodamente con un tram. Presenta la collezione dopo 25 anni con più di 400 opere ed una mostra celebrativa dei 150 anni dalla nascita di Piet Mondrian. Seguendo il momento storico sceglie anche di mettere in mostra diversi artisti ucraini.

And finally here we are: ART BASEL 2022 !!!

Do you have your bags ready for Basel? Plane, train or car? I usually alternate between train and car.

After two difficult years due to the pandemic, we return to the most beautiful and important contemporary art fair in the world. With some tricks and some changes, but the desire is great. Chinese collectors have some difficulties due to anti-Covid-19 measures and Russian collectors find themselves in a difficult situation due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and blocked accounts.

According to industry insiders, this has led to a new attendance at the fair, a renewal of the audience of Western and Eastern collectors.

A new generation coming !! A new round of collectors as well as a new round of artists brought by the galleries, great interest for those defined as blue-chip, but also emerging! What a great energy!

MESSE

What can we find stimulating inside the actual fair? Gagosian brought an interesting and dramatic 2014 JIM SHAW Not Since Superman Died staging with large panels hanging from the ceiling depicting Superman in times of trouble.

The Mexico City OMR gallery – in addition to Atelier Lieshout, Josè Dàvila, Jorge Méndez Blake – brings ‘A Labyrinth of a Straight Line‘ by TROYCA: paintings of a binary algorithm and the immersive, gigantic, universes of GABRIEL RICO made with beads fused together to digitize an image taken with the Hubble telescope in 2004. From P420 in Bologna we find LAURA GRISI with Variable Painting, a rare series from 1966. Works on plexiglass panels with clouds, the same panels can slide at the owner’s discretion.

Massimo de Carlo with Mapping the now brings a series of maps that are icons of the history of art and created by several artists. A multigenerational reflection on the borders, conflicts, cultures and tensions of today’s world.

Victoria Miro, in addition to Paula Rego and Chris Ofili, brings DO HO SUH Sockets / Switches (Rectangular / Horizontal), I must say an interesting, colorful and captivating work. At Sies + Hoeke he brings photography, sculpture and painting with beautiful underwater works by MARCEL DZAMA.

Brought by Gagosian, the giant RACHEL WITHEREAD building created for a project for the Guggenheim Museum and representing the artist’s home in London, which makes us meditate on the presence and absence of spaces and the human body typical of Witheread, is always impressive.

Numerous video installations. On the other hand, the works on the walls and the paintings suffer a little. Certainly not the wonderful ones by Francis Alys with his usual small paintings, this time dedicated to borders, barbed wire and fences between states. The works of Andrea Zittel with his clothes 2003-2013, Leonardo Drew with a beautiful installation of objects suspended in the air and in space in a very particular 3D setting, Folkert de Jong, Michelangelo Pistoletto or Isa Genzken have an impact.

Out of the fair

The Parcours section of Art Basel features several installations around the old town. There are twenty-one works spread across museums, gardens, headquarters, parking lots and old silversmiths. Some for example:

Beyeler Foundation
