Jacopo Benassi è un artista, il termine fotografo è riduttivo per identificarlo, non soltanto perché negli anni ha creato eventi, costruito mobili e arredi, prodotto dischi underground, lavorato sui video, aperto club, fatto performance live, ma soprattutto perché il mondo che ha delineato in tutte le sue espressioni è riconoscibile e comprensibile a chiunque. Un artista underground, ma dal cuore grande!
Celebri le sue mostre a Palazzo Bentivoglio a Bologna da Alberto e Gaia Vacchi Bologna Portraits nel gennaio 2019. Ritratti di bolognesi celebri o meno, crudi e potenti in bianco e nero con un forte flash, la sua cifra stilistica, in un grande ritratto della città e le immagini del giardino del palazzo fotografato al buio col flash nelle notti in cui risiedeva al palazzo e non riusciva a dormire, un momento privato e nascosto.
La mostra Vuoto al Centro Pecci a Prato nell’autunno 2020 a cura di Elena Maggini. Jacopo vuota il suo studio a La Spezia e lo ricrea ammassato nelle sale del Centro Pecci, dove espone le sue chitarre a croce, le sue ciabatte abbandonate al bancone degli attrezzi e appese nelle cornici insieme alle fotografie e numerose opere (The Belt) create appositamente con la collaborazione dell’ Archivio Manteco, esposte precedentemente in cartelloni in giro per la città di Prato.
Per visitare la sua Fondazione Benassi Iacopo FBI – creata con Antonio Grulli – bisogna recarsi nel suo studio-abitazione a La Spezia, attraversare un modo in costruzione di sintetizzatori musicali, oggetti da carpentiere, libri ed addentrarsi nel mini bagno: la vista migliore dalla tazza! Una fondazione voluta dall’artista e aperta prima ancora della sua scomparsa, perché l’arte deve essere vissuta con ironia. Non come passatempo.
Vi suggerisco di visitare entro il 31 luglio a La Spezia MATRICE, la sua ultima mostra organizzata dalla Fondazione Carispezia e curata da Antonio Grulli. Jacopo Benassi, in rapporto con la sua città madre, si reinventa, ricomincia creando uno spazio nuovo, un utero una matrice in cui crea le opere che andranno a formare la mostra. Un ritorno alla pittura insieme alle sue fotografie e le celebri cornici e vetri tagliati. Le pareti sono poi smembrate e ricostruite nelle sale laterali su cui monta i quadri.
Negli ultimi anni ha lavorato con la performance con Sissi. La galleria che lo rappresenta è Francesca Minini a Milano. Parteciperà con Unisex al progetto Oplà. Performing Activities, a cura di Silvia Fanti (Xing) durante ArteFiera a Bologna nella settimana 13-15 maggio 2022.

Jacopo Benassi is an artist, the term photographer is an understatement to identify him, not only because over the years he has created events, built furniture and furnishings, produced underground records, worked on videos, opened clubs, made live performances, but above all because the world that has outlined in all its expressions, it is recognizable and understandable to anyone. An underground artist, but with a big heart!
His exhibitions at Palazzo Bentivoglio in Bologna by Alberto and Gaia Vacchi Bologna Portraits in January 2019 are celebrated. Portraits of Bolognese people, whether famous or not, raw and powerful in black and white with a strong flash, his stylistic code, in a large portrait of the city and the images of the palace’s garden photographed in the dark with a flash on the nights when he resided in the palace and couldn’t sleep, a private and hidden moment.
The Vuoto exhibition at the Centro Pecci in Prato in autumn 2020 curated by Elena Maggini. Jacopo empties his studio in La Spezia and recreates it piled up in the rooms of the Centro Pecci, where he exhibits his cross guitars, his slippers abandoned at the tool counter and hung in the frames together with the photographs and numerous works (The Belt) created specifically with the collaboration of the Manteco Archive, previously exhibited on billboards around the city of Prato.
To visit his FBI Benassi Iacopo Foundation – created with Antonio Grulli – you have to go to his studio-home in La Spezia, cross a way of making music synthesizers, carpenter objects, books and enter the mini bathroom: the best view seated on the W.C. ! A foundation wanted by the artist and opened even before his death, because art must be experienced with irony. Not as a pastime.
I suggest you visit MATRICE, its latest exhibition organized by the Carispezia Foundation and curated by Antonio Grulli, by 31 July in La Spezia. Jacopo Benassi, in relationship with his mother city, reinvents himself, starts anew by creating a new space, a womb, a matrix in which he creates the works that will form the exhibition. A return to painting together with his photographs and the famous frames and cut glass. The walls are then dismembered and rebuilt in the side rooms on which he mounts the paintings.
